Why Does My Caller ID Look Wrong on Android?

“That’s not my name!” – What’s going on?

If people with Android phones are seeing the wrong name when you call – maybe an old business, a random label, or even “Spam” – you’re not imagining it.
The short version:
Android uses something called Smart Caller ID, and it sometimes pulls info from places we (your phone provider) don’t control.
The good news:
Your number isn’t broken, and there are steps you can take to fix how it shows up.

How Android Smart Caller ID Works (Without the Boring Bits)

When you call someone with an Android phone, their device doesn’t just ask us,
“Hey, what name goes with this number?”
Instead, it may also:

  • Look at Google’s data (Google Search, Maps, Business Profile)
  • Check third-party caller ID apps (Truecaller, Hiya, etc.)
  • Use crowdsourced reports (“Spam,” “Telemarketer,” “Not spam,” etc.)
  • Match against public or commercial directories

That means:

  • We can send the correct caller ID name from our side
  • But Android can still show something different based on its own info

Think of it like: we control one piece of the puzzle, but Android is using the whole box.

What We Can Do (Our Part)

On our side, we:

  • Make sure your number is assigned to you correctly
  • Set the caller ID name that we send when you place calls
  • Help you understand what’s going on and what you can do next

If your caller ID is wrong everywhere (landlines, non-Android phones, etc.), that’s usually something we can fix.
If it’s only wrong on Android phones or inside specific apps, that’s usually something Google or those apps control.

Step-by-Step: How to Fix Wrong Caller ID on Android

Step 1: Make Sure Your Caller ID Is Correct With Us

First, let’s rule out the basics.

  • Contact our support team and ask us to confirm your caller ID name
  • If it needs an update, we’ll fix it on our end
  • Changes in traditional caller ID systems can take a little time to fully update

Once we’ve confirmed everything looks good with your account, the rest is about helping Android and third-party apps catch up.

Step 2: If You’re a Business – Check Your Google Business Profile

If this number is for a business, Android often relies on Google’s own business data.
Do this:

  1. Go to your Google Business Profile (or create one if you don’t have it yet).
  2. Make sure these are correct:
    • Business name
    • Phone number (the exact one you’re calling from)
    • Address and business category
  3. Remove or fix any old listings with outdated names or numbers.

Why it matters:
If Google thinks your number belongs to “Old Brand Name Inc.,” Android may show that name when you call.

Step 3: Check Caller ID / Spam Apps (Truecaller, Hiya, etc.)

Many Android users install apps that do their own caller ID magic.
Common apps include:

  • Truecaller
  • Hiya
  • Other spam-blocking or caller ID apps

These apps maintain their own databases, which can sometimes:

  • Show the wrong business name
  • Mark your number as spam or telemarketing

What you can do:

  1. Search online for your number, like:
    • "<your phone number>" Truecaller
    • "<your phone number>" caller ID
  2. If you find your number:
    • Look for an option to claim or manage the listing
    • Update your business name and details
    • Request removal or correction if the label is wrong

Step 4: Ask Your Contacts to “Vote” for You

If people you call a lot are seeing something incorrect, they can help improve it.
Ask them to:

  • Mark your call as “Not spam” or “Safe” in their phone or spam-blocking app
  • Fix or delete any saved contact with the wrong name (saved contacts can override caller ID)

The more people who correct it, the more likely those apps and systems will adjust over time.

FAQ

“Can you just change what Android shows?”
We wish! Unfortunately, no carrier can directly edit Android’s Smart Caller ID or third-party databases. We make sure our caller ID is correct and then help you with the steps to fix external sources.
“How long until it updates?”

  • Updates on our side: may take some time to fully propagate through traditional caller ID systems.
  • Updates on Android / Google / third-party apps: depends on those providers and how frequently they refresh their data.

“Why does my number say ‘Spam’ on some phones?”
It might have been:

  • Previously used by another business
  • Flagged by users in spam-blocking apps
  • Misclassified by third-party databases

Following the steps above (especially checking caller ID apps and asking contacts to mark calls as “Not spam”) can help improve this over time.

If you’ve walked through these steps and things still look wrong, reach out to our support team. We’ll double-check everything on our side and help you figure out what to try next.
